My Day With The BraunPrize Jury: Florian Seiffert
You have certainly recognised that the judging session for the first round took place from Monday - Wednesday last week. Like last time back in 2007 I’ve been able to join the BraunPrize jury on Wednesday and participate in their last judging session.
From their feedback and also based on what I recall from the the jury sessions back in 2007 these jury sessions are pretty challenging at this stage, because the jury has to boil down the entries from a total of 1074 submissions to now 58 from 16 countries! You can imagine that this is pretty tough.
Therefore I’ve been more than happy that the three external jury members still agreed on giving a short interview. I did only slightly adapt my questions compared to my interviews back in 2007 as they have proven to capture some of the key issues that are of interest for both you the audience as well as the interviewees themselves.
In contrast to last time I’ve used a better video camera this time which proved to result in a far better image and sound quality. Still you will hear a basic level of noise that stems from all the people who are busy with facilitating such an event. And they are quite a few!
Anyway, from reading my previous postings you understand that Florian Seiffert has been the first BraunPrize winner ever and the event goes back to 1968! Accordingly what triggered me most has been the question how winning the BraunPrize competition has influenced his career. Today Florian is still busy with lecturing as a Professor for Product Design as well as consulting companies on Industrial Design projects.
From a personal perspective I’ve found Florian highly energetic and inspiring since very often he’s challenged the judging process from his ’seniority’ angle which stems from his decades long experience as a practising Designer … but let’s listen to Florian himself:
